The West Georgia Center for Civic Impact and Leadership
In my capacity as Director of Civic Engagement at the University of West Georgia I supervised the Center for Civic Impact and Leadership in the University College.
The work of the Center for Civic Impact and Leadership (CCIL) includes, but not be limited to, advocacy for curricular deployment of civic engagement and leadership elements into the Core and particular major curricular areas, coordination with the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management on civic engagement-relevant co-curricular activities, pursuit of outside funding in support of civic engagement activities, development of a method of assessing civic engagement outcomes in the curriculum and co-curriculum, liaison with community partners to develop opportunities beyond campus for student civic leadership, and the development and deployment of a communications strategy for outreach to campus and the community beyond.
The CCIL is driven by four core goals:
Educating students about current and historical issues related to democracy, participation, and governance.
Advancing student interest in becoming politically knowledgeable
Promoting the prerequisites of democracy through educational programs that emphasize freedom of speech, expression, and assembly; the value of diverse viewpoints; respect and appreciation for diversity in all forms, ethical thinking, and individual and collective empowerment through collaboration
Increasing tangible civic engagement activities in the curriculum and co-curriculum
